December in Europe is cold, dark early, and often damp. Here's what to expect on each river — and how to dress for it.

Rhine & Danube (Germany, Austria, Hungary)

Daytime highs 35–45°F (2–7°C), nighttime lows 28–36°F (-2–2°C). Often overcast with light rain or occasional snow. Daylight: 8am–4:30pm (about 8.5 hours).

Moselle & Main (Germany)

Similar to the Rhine — cold and damp, 32–42°F (0–6°C). The Moselle Valley is slightly milder thanks to the river's microclimate.

Seine (France)

Milder — 40–48°F (4–9°C), often damp. Paris is a few degrees warmer than the German rivers. Daylight: 8:30am–5pm.

Rhône (France, south)

The mildest of the Christmas rivers — 45–55°F (7–13°C) in Lyon and Avignon. Mistral winds can make it feel colder, but snow is rare. A good choice for travelers who find the German rivers too cold.

Douro (Portugal/Spain)

The warmest — 50–60°F (10–15°C) in Porto, often sunny. You might not need a heavy coat. The mildest Christmas-market experience on offer.

What to wear

Layers, always. A merino base layer, a fleece or light down mid-layer, and a waterproof, windproof shell. Waterproof walking shoes (cobblestones get slick). A warm hat, touchscreen gloves, and a scarf. See our full packing guide.

Tip

The markets are most magical at dusk — but dusk is 4pm in December. Plan to be at a market from 3:30–6pm for the best light and atmosphere, then retreat to a café or the ship for dinner.
