Christmas markets are a photographer's dream — illuminated stalls, cathedral backdrops, and warm light against cold air. Here's how to capture them.
Shoot at blue hour
The hour after sunset — when the sky turns deep blue but isn't fully dark — is the magic window. The market lights glow warm against the cool sky, and the cathedral silhouettes are still visible. Get to your spot 20 minutes before sunset and stay for 30 minutes after.
Use the glühwein glow
A mug of glühwein, held up in front of the market lights, makes a perfect foreground. The warm light through the mug illuminates your subject's face, and the bokeh (out-of-focus lights) behind is pure Christmas.
Bring the right gear
- A fast wide-angle lens (24mm or 35mm, f/1.8 or faster) for low light
- A small travel tripod or gorillapod for long exposures
- Touchscreen gloves so you can operate your camera in the cold
- Spare batteries (cold drains them fast — keep them in an inside pocket)
Phone photography
Modern phones do remarkably well in market light. Use night mode, tap to focus on the brightest light source, and lower the exposure slightly to deepen the colors. Shoot in portrait mode for shallow depth-of-field on the glühwein mug.
Tip
The best market photos are people photos. Photograph your travel companion with a mug of glühwein, framed by the market lights — it's the image you'll want to remember.
