Würzburg's Christmas market sits before the baroque Residenz (UNESCO) and the Marienberg fortress, in Franconian wine country.
Famous for
Baroque Residenz palace and a Romantic-Road Christmas market in Franconian wine country.
Würzburg is the northern gateway to the Romantic Road and the Main's most baroque stop. Its Christmas market fills the central square before the Falkenhaus (with its ornate rococo façade) and is framed by the Marienberg fortress on the hill above. The Residenz, a UNESCO-listed baroque palace with Tiepolo's largest fresco, is the headline excursion. Würzburg is Franconian wine country, so the glühwein is made from local Silvaner — lighter and less sweet than the Rhine versions.

Vibe: Baroque and vinicultural — a palace town on the Romantic Road.
Local tip
Walk the Old Main Bridge at sunset — it's lined with statues and the vineyards glow in the last light.
